If you are new to CBD, chances are that you will come across several terms that you won’t understand. Such terms will most likely include CBD isolate and full-spectrum. These terms refer to what part or parts of the cannabis plant are in CBD products. Allow us to explain.
CBD Isolate
CBD Isolate is exactly what you would think…pure CBD. In order to produce pure CBD isolate, manufacturers extract all of the other chemicals and compounds, including THC, leaving behind pure CBD in crystal form. This is accomplished through a filtration process. Next, what’s known as the “winterization process” takes place. The winterization process removes any remaining plant waxes or other plant material that may still be present after the filtration process. The end result is a fine, white powder that is 99% CBD with no distinctive taste or smell, that is easy to consume. CBD isolate contains zero THC, the cannabinoid in the cannabis plant known for its psychoactive effects, making it the best option for anyone who is sensitive to THC or is subject to regular or random drug tests.
Full-Spectrum CBD
Full-spectrum CBD is the exact opposite of CBD isolate. CBD is just one of over 100 cannabinoids that have been identified in cannabis plant. Full-spectrum CBD contains all of these cannabinoids. In addition, it also contains all of the other beneficial cannabis plant compounds such as essential vitamins and minerals; beneficial fatty acids like Omega-3 and Omega-6; plant-based proteins and fibers; chlorophyll; terpenes (unsaturated hydrocarbons found in the essential oils of the cannabis plant); and flavonoids (chemicals that are responsible for a plant’s color, smell, and flavor). Because full-spectrum CBD contains all cannabinoids present in cannabis, this means that THC is included. In the United States, to be sold and distributed legally, CBD products must have a THC content of less than 0.3%.
Studies have shown that when all of the cannabinoids and plant matter work together, it is more effective than one cannabinoid working alone. This is known as the “Entourage Effect”. The Entourage Effect is the result of many components of the cannabis plant interacting with the body to produce a more efficacy than any one of those components acting alone. The different compounds compliment the effect of the others, making the overall plant material, and eventually the CBD extract, that much more effective.
